Synopsis
In Ixaran, the Sun demands a life each year. The city has always paid. Seraya Savar has been chosen for the Stone - the ancient altar where the covenant between the city and the Sun is renewed in blood. She is supposed to kneel. She is supposed to bleed. She is supposed to save her city from the drought that is killing it slowly. She refuses. Her refusal fractures everything. The Dawn Circle, Ixaran's powerful religious authority, calls it heresy. Her own father disowns her to protect his house. The city's factions split between those who see her defiance as salvation and those who see it as the reason the rains won't come. And Commander Rathen, the blade's enforcer, will not let the covenant go unfinished. But Seraya has found something in the ancient texts of the Sky Tower - evidence that the sacrifice was never what the Dawn Circle claimed. That the original covenant required no blood. That the ritual that has killed for centuries was built on a lie. Now she must prove it before the city tears itself apart. At her side is Valen - a soldier whose loyalty to Ixaran has put him on the wrong side of every institution that once defined his life. What is growing between them is dangerous, not because it is forbidden, but because it is visible, and visibility in a city at war with itself is a weapon anyone can use. The drought worsens. The Sun keeps burning. And the girl who was supposed to die on the Stone is now the most dangerous person in Ixaran - not because she has power, but because she has proof.
