Synopsis

The Book of the New Sun is Gene Wolfe's four-volume masterwork, set on a far-future, dying Earth where the sun itself is guttering toward dark. It follows Severian, a journeyman of the torturers' guild who is exiled after the unforgivable act of showing mercy to a prisoner he has come to love. Carrying an executioner's sword — and, unknowingly, a relic of immense power — he wanders a strange, decaying world where ancient technology survives as something indistinguishable from magic. From the very first page we are told what he will become: the Autarch who rules it all. Dense, allusive, and unreliable in its telling, it is widely regarded as one of the towering achievements of science fantasy.
