In this sequel to The Last Cannibal, we follow Maya and her daughter Gertie on their separate journeys of survival through an unforgiving world still haunted by the Kuru88-the Cannibal disease. As the world continues to rebuild after the great scourge and subsequent Cannibal wars, young Gertie finds herself at Greyburry, an elite prep school where exceptional students are groomed to produce exceptional babies. Or else. After winning her class Challenge and making it to the Down House, Gertie is genetically matched with Asher, her perfect partner. But when the two decide to defy the treaties and escape Greyburry on the night of their Binding ceremony, they find themselves lost in a not-so-perfect world still plagued by its evil past.
