Synopsis

With the King's army shattered at the Mirallyn fjords, Wyll finds himself holding its remnants together by sheer force of will as they retreat from the disastrous battle. As General Messand wakes from his dire wounds though, it becomes immediately clear he is no longer the man he was, and must not be allowed to continue as the army's commander. Meanwhile, Heramiir and his cavalry are racing for the Great Staircase, desperately trying to reach the Sammorand Plains ahead of the western nations. If they fail to reach the top of the cliffs first, the enemy will have unfettered access to the entire westernmost duchy of Jeranon, reshaping borders that have held steady for a thousand years. After murdering the assassin plaguing Aramar's magi, Jayden can control himself no longer. Leaving the capital in the dead of night despite the King's warning, he has only one thing on his mind; the death of Count Dael. He knows the cost of taking vengeance will be having the King declare him renegade; a decree which will force all other magi to hunt him until he is captured or dead. But the time for inaction has passed. The Day of Reckoning is here, and nothing will halt the wheels of war and vengeance.
