Synopsis

A fresh terror. An impossible decision. And a new player pulling the strings¿ With another member abducted and Shade demanding a new rescue mission, Rebecca Bloodshadow comes face to face with her own mistakes. And this time, she's not alone. After infiltrating Chicago's not-so-abandoned Old Joliet Prison, and Maxwell Hannigan blowing the whole operation, Rebecca and her shifter Head of Security are further bound by their deadly mistake. They've witnessed the horrors beyond those walls-Kordus Harkennr's ghastly experiments on the city's unwilling magical civilians. But the psychotic mastermind behind these atrocities is crueler and far deadlier than any enemy Shade's ever faced. To recover their hostage, Rebecca must play by the old world's ancient, twisted laws, and of course Maxwell won't let her go it alone. Her only advantage is knowing exactly how Chicago's demented new crime lord operates. But if word gets out that she once worked beside a monster like Harkennr, Rebecca's time as the Roth-Da'al is over¿and Shade is doomed. Juggling an ill-equipped task force, a mystifying link with Maxwell growing stronger-and more impossible to resist-by the day, and Rowan's ceaseless reminders of their prophecy-bound duty she's already renounced, Rebecca can't hold everything together forever. One misstep, and the war for Chicago is inevitable. But when enemies bear gifts and friends can't be trusted, how far will the Bloodshadow Heir go to protect what really matters?
