Synopsis
The story focuses on the relationship between George II and his wife Caroline with their son Frederick, Prince of Wales, against the backdrop of political intrigue and plotting. The parents hate their eldest son for reasons given towards the end. Prime Minister Robert Walpole, the Queen's favourite Lord Hervey, Frederick's young wife Augusta also appear. There are also fictional characters: the English wife of the Emperor of Morocco, with her protector Javan Tierce. Falsely accused of theft by her employer whose son she had married, she was sentenced to transportation. Shipwrecked on coast of Morocco, she was able to rise in society. Ostensibly in England to further a financial transaction she uses several disguises and 2witchcraft3 to clear her name. She and Javan strike up a friendship with the Prince of Wales, who, with his pregnant wife, is a virtual prisoner at Court. There are attempts on his life and efforts to precipitate a miscarriage. Javan rescues him from an attempted abduction and helps the couple to flee to London where the baby is delivered. Javan has the opportunity to win back his lands and the Princess to clear her name but both refuse on principle. She loses her fortune.
