The fifth of the adventures of Casimir FitzDuncan. By decree of the king, he is granted a title and directed to take command of the defense of the Eastern March. The horse nomads from across the desert have come for their annual spree of looting and pillaging and Caz must keep them at bay. Despite being grossly outnumbered in the beginning, Caz has success with a bold approach, culminating in his daring gambit that forces the nomads to depart earlier than usual. Caz is then ordered to accompany Prince Albert to the southern continent, to Scaramouche. He is joined on this mission by Fenwick, the royal assassin, and his friend Lord Rawlinsford, in the guise of Lord Compote. After his successful return, Caz receives another troubling prediction from the mysterious and odiferous Dr. Flamel that leads him to assist with the rescue of a kidnapping victim.
