Apprentice

He hasn't earned the title yet — and the book is the long, often painful argument for him doing so.

The apprentice hero is fantasy's most honest learning curve made flesh: a boy bound to a master in a craft that matters — wizardry, smithing, assassination, scribework — and the book is the chronicle of his slow, uneven, sometimes humiliating climb toward competence. Eragon under Brom, Garion under Belgarath, the Name of the Wind's stretches at the University, Arya in the House of Black and White — the archetype works because the gap between knowing and doing is one of the genre's richest dramatic spaces.

The appeal is the relationship — the mentor's withholding wisdom, the sharp small failures, the books and forms and exercises that make the magic real — and the satisfaction of watching a hero earn what other archetypes are given. Expect strict craft, scenes that turn on a tiny mastered detail, and the bittersweet eventual moment when the apprentice surpasses what he was taught. This is the archetype for readers who love watching a hero get good slowly, the right way.
