Synopsis

After her best friend, Max, drowns, grief-stricken Charlie discovers that she can enter a mysterious afterlife when she is dreaming, and as she tries desperately to find Max, she puts herself in grave danger from which only her brother can save her.

Is The Leap appropriate for my child?

Suitable for most readers 10 and up.

Parents should know this book deals frankly with the death of a child by drowning and the protagonist's intense grief that leads her into dangerous supernatural territory. The emotional weight is significant, but handled appropriately for middle grade with sibling support providing a safety net.

What to know going in

This book has mild violence, no sexual content, and clean language. Content notes include death, death of child, and grief (see the full list above).

Who'll love this

Readers will be drawn to Charlie's desperate quest to find her best friend in a mysterious dream world, even as she risks her own safety.
